Culver and Maloney

What do he names Culver and Maloney have in common? First of all, they both pitched for the Reds. George Culver was with the Reds in 1968 and 1969 and Jim Maloney played for the Reds from 1960-70. Both of them were pitchers and both pitched no-hitters for the Reds. In fact, Jim Maloney actually pitched 3 no-hitters, but he is only credited with two in the record books because one went beyond nine innings. He eventually lost the game on a home run in (I believe) the 11th inning. Culver’s no-hitter was one in which he allowed a run because he walked 5 batters. George Culver’s career continued with several other teams, and he just retired from baseball two years ago. Jim Maloney twice won 20 games for the Reds, was an all-star and still has some records in the Reds’ books. Both grew up in the same location in California and both are living there now. It is also strange that both of them were with the Reds at the same time. Culver spent a lot of time in baseball after he left the playing field–much of it with the Phillies organization. Jim Maloney is still an ambassador for the Reds and has his best friend living in Cincy, so he makes trips to the Queen City often.
