So many schools these days have the problem of coaches who fail to share their athletes. This is not the case at Batesville. Both Eric Heppner and Aaron Garrett encourage their athletes to stay active. Both realize that athletes competing on teams are much more likely to stay in shape and do better in the classroom. The only reason I can see for an athlete to concentrate on one sport at the high school level is if they are so good at that sport that it is certain they will play it at the next level and beyond. The other reason might be if that is the only sport in which they can realistically compete. Kids at this age do not usually know what they are going to be best at, and they need to have some fun exploring other sports. I don’t understand why a football coach would not want his backs and certain defensive players getting quicker by working on sprints in track. All athletes lift weights these days, so that reason for not playing a spring sport holds no water in my opinion. We all know that kids with too much time on their hands usually find something to do–and often it is not good. Basketball players make excellent track or baseball players because of their size and coordination. A lot of coaches like their athletes to play tennis to improve foot work which is important in whatever you play. Finally, isn’t it the athlete who should decide what he would like to do at least part of the time?
