Local Communities Felt Detonations At Proving Grounds

Military activity at the Jefferson Proving Grounds caused some communities to feel and hear it miles away.
Military activity at the Jefferson Proving Grounds caused concern in local communities Wednesday.

Residents in local towns were alarmed when they felt their homes shaking and heard a “loud roar” Wednesday afternoon. The sudden noise caused some to question if an earthquake had occurred.

Citizens in Holton, Moores Hill and Delaware contacted us on Facebook and inquired if we knew anything about it. After speaking with authorities in Ripley County, it was determined that the National Guard was detonating old explosives at the Jefferson Proving Grounds.

Prior to all the shaking, military officials contacted the Ripley County Sheriffs Office to inform them of the activity. More detonations are scheduled for next Wednesday, officials said.
