Charles “Chuck” Schornick

The Jac-Cen-Del Community lost one of its biggest cheerleaders on Monday, November 21, 2016. Charles “Chuck” Schornick gained his Eagles Wings and went home.  He was the son of the late Leroy and Grace Myers Schornick and was born on October 25, 1938.  He grew up in the Osgood community and was a proud Osgoodian “Cowboy.”   He was married to the love of his life for 46 years, Penny Jo Halcomb, who still survives at home.  To this marriage they were blessed with 3 children.

Chuck had attended Osgood High School, where he was a good basketball and baseball player for the “Cowboys.” He even received an award for making the most free throws.  He did so well in baseball, he was even invited to try out for the Cincinnati Reds!!!  Penny would point out when Chuck went to the state fair, he would shoot the basketball game and limit out on the prizes and would carry out arms full of teddy bears.  Many people will remember him as a dedicated little league coach and fair baseball umpire.  He would actually take the whole month of May off to umpire games.  Chuck truly loved attending all of the different youth athletic events, especially in Osgood, but also around the Ripley County area.  He had a passion to play golf and loved watching it on TV.  He was extremely proud of how his grandchildren had inherited the love of the game.

Chuck proudly served in the United States Army in the early 1960’s and was a member of the Versailles American Legion.  He was a familiar face all around and was known as the UPS guy, working there for 32 years, retiring in 1998.  He attended Osgood First Baptist Church.

He was a gentleman that never met a stranger and always had a way of making for a better day.  Chuck was passionate about seeing kids succeed and cheered for their success and never belittled them in failure.  He loved to share a joke and make a person smile.  As his health failed, he could still be seen, mowing his yard, oxygen mask in place, or riding down a side street in his golf cart.  NO ONE loved their family more than Chuck….

Even though his game here may be over, it’s overtime and his memory lives on.  He was a deeply loved husband, dad, grandfather (Pap), brother, friend, and cheerleader, who will be deeply missed
