Cardinals Defeat St. Paul’s Huskies

basketballThe St. Louis 5th grade boys basketball team played St. Paul’s of New Alsace this evening and won their 9th game of the season. The Cardinals outscored St. Paul 33-2.

The Cardinals played an outstanding game defensively as they held St. Paul’s scoreless until the fourth quarter. The Cardinals were able to get everyone in the scoring column for the first time this year. Nate Vankirk led the way with seven points followed by Conner Ertel (6), Alec Bunselmeier (5), Frank Forbeck (4), Cy Muckerheide (3), Aidan Geers (2), Luke Meer (2), Jack Hollins (2) and Nate Reder with two with only eleven seconds left in the game. The bucket by Jack Hollins was exceptionally special this evening, as Jack was the final Cardinal to break into the scoring column for the fifth grade team this year. Jack’s teammates cheered loudly in recognition of the accomplishment.

The St. Louis 6th grade boys basketball team wasted no time in getting back in action after their tournament this past weekend and posted a nice win over St. Paul’s Monday evening 37-26.

The home team Huskies had a lot working for them through the first 3 quarters and it took everything the Cardinals had to make it close. The 4th quarter was the difference maker when the boys really stepped up their defense. Joseph Suttman turned it on
and not only was able to deny their big inside scorer the ball but also got outside the lane to deflect and steal several passes.

The pressure on their ball handlers was relentless from Cayden Pohlman, Adam Vogelsang and Hunter Laudick. Vogelsang got the Cardinals in the scoring column early with help from Suttman and Spencer Mack. The 3rd quarter belonged to Laudick who hit 4 tough contested shots and brought them within range to win it. Laudick’s hot 3rd quarter was the spark the rest of the team needed and they brought the defensive intensity to finish the work. Ryan Reder was able to pressure several inbound passes from St Paul’s that produced some late turnovers to seal the win.
