Bulldogs Battle Cardinals

basketballThe Batesville Middle School 7th grade boys lost to their crosstown rival St. Louis on Monday night 27-17.

The Bulldogs came out and played with great intensity for the entire game. Batesville played some great defense overall, but had trouble getting shots to fall on offense and had some costly turnovers that put them in a hole and the Cardinals came away with a 27 to 17 victory.

Batesville was led by Calvin Sherwood with 5 points, RJ Powell with 4 points, Mason Barker and Damon Grieshop with 3 points each and Ethan Brewer had 2 points. The 7th grade’s record falls to 3-5 on the year.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday night when they take on the Sunman Dearborn Trojans at home starting at 5:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Batesville Middle School last night at the annual cross-town shootout 27-17.

The game turned into a defensive battle from the start as both teams kept their opponent from getting any easy shots. The Cardinals played an aggressive defense against Batesville preventing the Bulldogs from any wide open looks. Batesville played tough on defense as well especially with their full court press which created some key turnovers. The Cardinals were led defensively by Sam Voegele and LLeyton Ratcliffe as they came up with big rebounds all night. Andrew Oesterling also played well defensively as he came up with several big steals for the Cardinals.

On offense, Kurt Siefert, who has been one of the Cardinals most reliable shooters all season, hit a much needed three pointer mid-way through the 2nd quarter to help give the Cardinals a 13-6 lead at half time. In the 3rd quarter, the Bulldogs got a couple big three pointers from Mason Barker and Damon Grieshop which seemed to ignite the Bulldogs but the Cardinals got a big basket of their own when Oesterling knocked one in from outside the arc. The 3rd quarter was played almost evenly as St. Louis outscored Batesville by just a point to take a 22-14 lead going into the 4th quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals slowed the game down and kept the Bulldogs from making any kind of run allowing the Cardinals to win the game by the final score of 27 – 14.

The scoring for Batesville had Barker with 3, Greishop 3, Calvin Sherwood 5, RJ Powell 4 and Ethan Brewer had 2. For the Cardinals, Siefert had 4, Wil Freeland 2, Oesterling 13, Ratcliff 6 and Voegele had 2.

The next game for the Cardinals is this Wednesday at 6:00 against St. Bartholomew’s of Columbus.
