The Batesville Fire Department released a monthly activity report at a recent City Council Meeting.

According to Fire Chief Todd Schutte, the department responded to 67 emergency runs including seven alarms for vehicle accidents in October.

“It just depends on the month,” said Schutte. “Last month was busy but we have had busier months.”

With 18 volunteer firefighters, the fire chief added the department is dealing with low staffing and currently accepting volunteer firefighter applications.

We’ve had some cold weather so far this year and with winter around the corner, we will be returning to cold conditions.

Schutte said that it is a good idea to have your furnace checked out by a professional in order to prevent a fire in your home.

“They should have maintenance done on their furnace and have those checked. If they burn wood, they should definitely have their chimney inspected,” advised Schutte.
