Allen W. “Andy” Irrgang

IrrgangA4Allen W. “Andy” Irrgang, age 91 of Batesville, died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Margaret Mary Health. Born April 22, 1924 in Batesville, he is the son of Clara (Nee: Hoff) and Andrew Irrgang. He married Clare Voegele-Brunner June 3, 1953 at St. Anthony’s Church in Morris and she preceded him in death on August 3, 2015. He served in the Navy during World War II and after the service would open the Irrgang Insurance Agency. He was a member of St. Louis Church, the Knights of Columbus #1461, Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 Auxiliary, a former three term Batesville City Councilman and a founding board member of the Golden Villa Apartments.

Andy saw and did a lot in his 91 years. He delivered milk for Wonning’s Dairy Farm while in high school and up until he was drafted. A trumpet player, he played in a dance band while in the service and several local bands including the Fritz Turner Band after the service. An avid baseball fan, he played on Batesville’s Tri-County League team for years and was a lifelong Reds fan. An occasional golfer in his younger years, he would begin to play regularly in his fifties and eventually join the local group who play on Monday mornings. For years he bowled in the Super League, spent many a Friday night enjoying dinner at the Knights of Columbus and then horseshoes and a cold beer at Woody Voegele’s. The kids teased that Andy was a little fanatical about a clean car and keeping the lawn mowed and looking good. He liked to watch Lawrence Welk, Andy Griffith, PBS documentaries and had a fondness for seafood. He and Clare enjoyed traveling and were able to visit several countries over the years. Because of Andy’s knowledge of local history, he was a valuable source of information to the Batesville Historical Society in identifying people, businesses and events from days gone by.

Andy is survived by his daughter Christine Evans of Indianapolis; son and daughter-in-law John and Janna Irrgang of Batesville; step daughter Ellen Lutterloh of Lafayette, Indiana; step son and daughter-in-law Martin and Connie Brunner of Batesville; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Virginia Irrgang, Evelyn Moeller and brother Stanley Irrgang.

Visitation is Friday, February 5th, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, February 6th at St. Louis Church with Rev. Stan Pondo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to the Batesville Historical Society or the Batesville V.F.W.
